ESU GIFT OF KNOWLEDGE AWARD
2007
The English Speaking Union of Malaysia
(ESU Malaysia), as part of its annual, ESU Malaysia - Gift of
Knowledge Program, is donating a selection of books to Sekolah
Menengah Keb. Seksyen 24, Shah Alam, Selangor. The purpose of
this effort is to bring English literature to schools that might
otherwise not have financial access to these publications, and by doing
so, help to raise students’ proficiency in English.
Sekolah Menengah Keb. Seksyen 24 was
officially opened in 1993 and caters to the needs of students living in
Section 17 and Section 24 of Shah Alam. 70% of the students come from
medium and low-income groups, covering all ethnicities and religions.
At present, 920 students are studying from Form 1 to Form 5, all of
whom are in the morning session. Puan Fauzia bt. Mohd Noor is the
school Principal.
Although the main language spoken by
the students is Malay, the school has performed well in the English PMR
and SPM examination results. Some of the strategies used to promote
fluency in English include, intensive reading programmes carried out to
all forms throughout the year; having an English speaking month and
organizing activities for all students to participate in the Resource
Centre. These books will be used in the Resource Center.
The books include an award winning
selection of fiction (“Gilead” by Marilynne Robinson), poetry
(“Collected Poems” by Donald Justice) and other titles.
