Thevesh Thevananthan, 17, from Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Jambul, Penang, the winner of the The Star-English Speaking Union (Malaysia)-PKT Logistics Public Speaking Competition 2013 beat 53 other countries to emerge as the Audience Choice Winner Award at the recent World Championships of Public Speaking held in London on the 17th of May, 2013.

Thevesh had to first qualify for the semi-finals based on a 5 minute prepared speech with the theme, “Ideas are our Greatest Weapons” and the ability to take the questions from the audience. The 18 semi-finalists then had to compete in an impromptu speech competition with a 15 minutes preparation time. Again, Malaysia emerged as a winner by making it to the finals.

At the finals, Thevesh presented a prepared speech entitled, “This One’s For Us” and took some questions from the floor. It was a great victory for Malaysia when Thevesh was announced as the Audience Choice Winner based on the votes by the invited guests in the audience.

Thank you Thevesh for making Malaysia proud.

Best speakers : Thevesh being flanked by Caryl (left) and Jeffrey Johan.

PETALING JAYA: Thevesh Thevananthan did what he must and emerged as the champion of The Star-English Speaking Union (ESU) Malaysia-PKT Logistics Public Speaking Competition 2013.

The 17-year-old will go on to represent Malaysia at the ESU International Public Speaking Competition 2013 in London next month.

The eloquent speaker brought confidence and humour to the stage with his “This one’s for us”.

“I remember being part of the audience when I was 12,” Thevesh said yesterday. “Since then, it’s been my dream to compete in this competition. Winning it eventually is a surprise but I am proud of it.”

As part of the package, Thevesh will also receive public speaking training from experts, a round of visits in London, including the home of ESU-Dartmouth House.

He is also slated to become the alumnus of one of the most prestigious organisations in the world.

Chief judge Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah said Thevesh was different from the others.

“His topic was different. He threw his voice, his answers were good, he had humour and we will polish his speech and fine-tune it for London,” she said.

First runner-up Caryl Teh En-Ai received RM1,000, while second runner-up Jeffrey Johan Adlan Disney received RM500.

The panel of judges included Gail Featherstone, wife of the British High Commissioner and adviser of Esum, PKT Logistics Group chairman Datuk Jalilah Baba and Roopvanti M, Lakhiani, Jagdish Bain and Datin Shalini Ganendra from Esum.

Lucky 13: The 13 participants cheering after making it through.

PETALING JAYA: Public speaking can unsettle some people, even those who chat too much. But Kaberi Dutta gathered her nerves and became one of 13 participants who made it through the semi-finals of The Star-ESU Malaysia Public Speaking Competition 2013. Whether or not she'll be in the finals will be known later.

“My teacher put me on the spot when she said that I should enter the competition since I talk so much. I didn't know how to get out from that corner but I have had absolutely no regrets since joining,” she said.

In her five-minute prepared speech, the Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar A-Level student talked about how schools stifled creativity in students via her given theme “Ideas Are Our Greatest Weapons”.

Her schoolmate and fellow semi-finalist, Jeffrey Johan Adlan Disney, spoke about how “ideas are double-edged swords”, as they could backfire and have unintended consequences.

“I have been working late into the night non-stop for the past week or so to prepare for this session,” he said. “I was nervous and I'm still nervous! I'm going to be on tenterhooks for the next week until the finalists are announced.”

The semi-finalists would be short-listed for the finals based on their performance at the semi-finals, which assessed the substance of their speech, style and technique, general effectiveness and the ability to answer questions from a panel of judges.

Teresa Mah, Seonaidh Chai, Jagdish Bhain, Hamidah Ibrahim and chief judge Sheela Joseph from English Speaking Union (ESU) Malaysia made up the panel for this leg of the competition.

The finalists would be announced next week and the national finals would be held on April 27 here.

The winner would represent the nation at the international competition in London next month.

The Malaysian segment is jointly organised by The Star and ESU Malaysia, with PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd as the co-organiser.

For enquiries on the competition, contact 03-79671388 ext 1240/1237/1244.

A guide to the judging process during the Public Speaking Competition 2013 has been made available. You can download the guide here.

The search is on for the next Malaysian representative to the ESU International Public Speaking Competition.

Come forward and show off your verbal prowess and gift of the gab! Who knows, you could walk away with a trip to London to represent Malaysia in the English Speaking Union (ESU) International Public Speaking Competition.

Our Malaysia representative did the nation proud by doing just that last year, and she became the first Malaysian to win one of the most coveted titles in the world English public speaking circuit!
