SHAKESPEARE AND HIS STAGE
The ESU and Globe Education
A Cultural Seminar for Teachers
At Shakespeare's Globe
13th - 19th August 2006
This one-week course at Shakespeare’s
Globe will provide teachers (equivalent to British secondary
school level) with insights into the crafts involved in
creating a production for the Globe Theatre. Teachers will
work with Globe Education staff to explore practical approaches
to teaching Shakespeare in the classroom.
Teachers will attend three of the Globe’s productions:
Antony and Cleopatra, Titus Andronicus and The Comedy of
Errors. They will meet and work with members of the Globe
Theatre Company responsible for design, direction, movement,
music, text and voice to explore how productions at the
Globe are conceived and mounted. Delegates will also have
the opportunity to discuss the place of Shakespeare in
their respective countries and classrooms.
AIMS:
Teachers attending this course should have experience
of teaching Shakespeare in the classroom and an interest
in participating in a course with the following aims:
- To consider how the discoveries being made at the
Globe Theatre can inform our understanding of Shakespeare
in performance and our approaches to teaching Shakespeare
in the classroom.
- To explore the relationship the Globe
architecture creates between actor and audience and
to consider how it can inform our understanding of the
relationship between teacher and student within the classroom.
- To
consider how Shakespeare is translated both in terms
of performance and classroom curricula across the world.

though English at a time when English has become the working
language of the global village. This unprecedented expansion
in the use of English has accompanied the changes throughout
the world, the arrival of the global economy and the spread
of the internet. These and other factors have combined
to make English indispensable to the world.
During its 85 year history the ESU has played an important
part in fostering cultural links between nations. The original
ties between Great Britain, the United States of America
and Commonwealth countries have, in recent decades, been
extended world-wide. Many scholarships, internships and
exchanges are sponsored by the ESU, providing the opportunity
for study both in the UK and overseas. These awards include
grants to young musicians, young teachers and postgraduate
students. Debates, conferences and lectures allow ESU members
to exchange views on a wide range of contemporary issues.
The ESU also runs events and competitions for schools and
universities in the UK that support the effective use of
the English language. The ESU is a membership organization
with branches throughout the UK and with ESUs active in
