ENGLISH SPEAKING UNION TO PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING
Kuala Lumpur: An English Speaking Union (ESU) of Malaysia will soon be established here to promote international understanding and human achievement through wide use of the English language.
ESU chairman Tunku Dara Naquiah Tuanku Ja'afar said the setting up of the society was a response to globalisation by working through community exchanges, scholarships, eloquence competitions, conferences and international programmes.
To be launched on Nov 2 at the National Art Gallery, the society targets schoolchildren, students and young professionals.
ESU Malaysia, she said would also enhance existing educational co-operation between Malaysia and other countries by organizing international programmes.
“There are worrying signs that younger children, particularly those from deprived areas, are missing out on learning to speak and listen to good English.
“The English language today belongs to the world. It is the language of commerce and the language of travel. Thus, ESU Malaysia aims to help in ensuring we measure up to the demands of mastering the language,” she said.
The society would be an avenue for Malaysians of all ages, to polish their command of English.
ESU Malaysia, Tunku Dara said, would have a host of activities, including poetry readings, literary appreciation nights and the staging of popular plays, lined up for its members.
