UNION TO IMPROVE ENGLISH USAGE
Kuala Lumpur: Improving your English could be a fun thing through the English-Speaking Union (ESU) of Malaysia to be launched on Nov 2.
Established in 1918, ESU is an international, independent, non-political educational non-governmental organization based in Dartmouth House, London with affiliates in 51 countries.
ESU Malaysia’s objective is to widen the use of the English language, its chairman, Tunku Dara Naquiah Tuanku Ja'afar, said yesterday.
Its aim is not to teach but to complement the formal teaching of English by helping people use the language through various activities.
ESU Malaysia will organize activities such as literary appreciation nights, poetry recitals, reading of plays, and screening of films.
It also plans to hold a nationwide public speaking competition for schools, colleges and universities. The winners will get to represent the country at international meets.
Annual ESU membership fees are RM10 for those aged between 18 and 25, RM30 for those above 25, and RM20 for those over 60.
